In this post I will tell you about the 2 day trip my girlfriend took to Liwonde National Park. We made sure we milked our 2 days efficiently since we weren't going to be there for long.
DAY 1
We started our safari tours the same day we arrived because we arrived at around 12 and so we went on our first safari which was a boat safari at around 2:30.
The guy eating on the river bank |
We saw him just as we were about to navigate out of the reeds into the centre of of the shire river. When we got in the middle there was so much more to see including who I'm assuming are his family among many others.
Shire river is home to many hippos and crocs especially around here, I could post way more pictures of these guys but to save page space I wont, if you want more please visit the gallery page where I have more. Now moving on a little from here we saw some of really astonishing views and this boat ride was already worth it at this point, like I said there are also many crocodiles in this river but we didn't get to see much, we only saw 1 and he went underwater before we could take any pictures, the guide said the lack of crocs was probably because the vegetation had grown so much and they were probably hiding and some had migrated because of all the fishing activity taking place around the place. But on our way back we managed to see one elephant which was very surprising as they don't usually come close to the river in the rainy season cause there's plenty of food and water on land to facilitate them.
The chill dude feeling disturbed from his meal |
Out of sight, out of mind |
When we got back to our lodge we stayed for a bit resting up in anticipation for dinner when suddenly our neighbour (really nice guy with several stories to tell) comes up to me who (was busy looking at the computer screen) and asks if I've noticed our uninvited guest, I look up and there he was....
This guy probably walked here because the water was too shallow to swim around here, he came ate everything he could get his adorable, ginormous mouth on and then he left as if he was never there, amazing how an animal that large can pull this kind of disappearing act.
A little while after this we went for dinner and then went to bed cause our land safari was early the next day.
DAY 2
We started off at 6:00 am, all the lodges around here recommend starting off early because thats when some animals are starting their day and some are ending it, and I truly appreciated those words when we started seeing them. As soon as we entered the park we started off on one of the roads there, and then our tour guide received a call from one of the other guides that was there telling him he had spotted cheetahs, he asked us if we wanted to see them and if we did want to see them we'd have to travel very fast because they were a bit far and they were on the move and obviously the answer was YES!!!!! with a capital YESSSS!!!!! because both my girlfriend and I had never seen cheetahs before, we rushed there and fantastically we made just in time and I'll explain the how and how in a bit, let me start with the how,,, we rushed there in our safari car which was open and got hit by the morning cold wind with the bits of sun splashed through our drive and I must say that was a fun way to start the journey,, and now to the second how; we managed to make it in time because for very fast creatures they move extremely slow and shade to shade on their way back into the green brushes of the mountain, I can only guess its because they want to conserve the food and energy because apparently they go out to feed once in a couple of days (please correct me if I'm wrong in the comment's section), when we got there there were 5 cheetahs in total, they moved to about 3 different shades before another 1 joined them.
I have always loved cheetahs since I was a child but I never imagined just how magnificent they are, and this trip really confirmed my knowledge that animals kill out of necessity not for spot because at some points there were warthogs playing dangerously close to the cheetahs and none of the cheetahs even cared, they were all about resting and moving,,,,, nothing else.
Unfortunately these are the closest pictures we could take because we didn't have that much time because we only had 3 hours and by this time we had about 2 and a half hours left and these beautiful beasts were moving too slow so we decided to move on because there was still so much ground to cover and even the 3 hours in whole is not enough as it is.
After driving for a bit down the road we came across something I couldn't help but take a picture of.....
What are Y'all doin ere? |
staring at us as if he was asking what we were looking at, it was truly amazing and apparently he slowly turning wise and grey (Gandalf😂😂 "sorry I couldn't help it") as evidenced by the twists on his horns and I don't know if you can see this but the tips of his horns are turning white as well. After staring for a few moments he realised we weren't moving any time soon so he did what every self respecting person or creature does
We weren't about to disturb his meal.
Okay so now before I end this there's just one more image I have to show you and that's it I'll end this post here
